What Is Licensed

The following data is published by MyAQI.org under CC BY 4.0:

• 1.1 Outdoor AQ readings. All PM2.5, PM10, PM1, NO₂, SO₂, and AQI readings collected from outdoor monitoring devices — whether from citizen-contributed devices, partner devices, CPCB/government stations, or satellite sources — are open data and freely licensed under CC BY 4.0.
• 1.2 Aggregated indoor readings. Anonymised, aggregated indoor air quality data (where citizens have opted in to public sharing) is also licensed under CC BY 4.0. This data is provided at geographic grid-cell level and cannot be traced to individual citizens or devices.
• 1.3 Historical archives. All historical data going back to the start of the MyAQI.org initiative is included in the open licence and available for download via the API.
• 1.4 What is NOT licensed. Individual citizen identities, individual device IMEIs, and non-opted-in indoor readings are not part of the open data and are governed separately by India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023.

MyAQI.org Supplementary Conditions

The following conditions apply in addition to the CC BY 4.0 standard terms and are specific to the air quality data context:

• 4.1 No misleading use. You must not use MyAQI.org data in a manner that is likely to mislead the public about air quality conditions — for example, cherry-picking readings to misrepresent a neighbourhood's AQI as better or worse than the data shows.
• 4.2 Accuracy context. If you publish or republish MyAQI.org data, you must include a reasonable indication that readings are from low-cost sensors contributed by citizens and partner networks, and may vary from reference-grade monitoring station data.
• 4.3 Vendor commercial rights precedence. The open data licence does not override the commercial rights granted to data partner vendors under the MyAQI.org Vendor Agreement. Open data users may not use the data to contact or market to individual citizens — that right belongs exclusively to opted-in data partners.
• 4.4 Notification for large-scale use. Organisations planning to use MyAQI.org data at significant scale (more than 1 million API calls per month, or in products with more than 10,000 users) are requested — but not required — to notify MyAQI.org at data@myaqi.org. This helps us track impact and acknowledge your use of the data.
• 4.5 Civic purpose encouragement. MyAQI.org encourages use of the data for purposes that benefit public health, environmental awareness, civic engagement, and air quality improvement. If you build something useful with the data, we'd love to hear about it.
• 4.6 No warranty. MyAQI.org data is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind. Readings from low-cost citizen sensors may contain errors, gaps, or calibration offsets. MyAQI.org accepts no liability for decisions made on the basis of the data. Users should exercise appropriate professional judgement, especially for health-critical applications.

Vendor Data Partners — Licence Interaction

Data contributed by vendor partners (Respirer, Smiledrive, AQI.in, Aurassure, and others) to the MyAQI.org platform is incorporated into the open data licence once contributed. This means:

• 5.1 Outdoor data contributed by vendors becomes open data under CC BY 4.0 immediately upon contribution and cannot be subsequently restricted or withdrawn from the open dataset.
• 5.2 Vendors retain their own intellectual property rights in their device firmware, calibration algorithms, and proprietary software. The open data licence covers only the data readings themselves.
• 5.3 The commercial rights granted to vendors under the MyAQI.org Vendor Agreement (first right of refusal on opted-in citizen marketing) are separate from and additional to the open data licence. These commercial rights are not transferred to general data users.
